It prefers patches of lowland humid forest and forest edges, and uses adjacent clearings to hunt. It, like most jacamars, shows iridescent plumage. Jacamars often perch on branches or vines, looking up, and then sally out to catch wasps, butterflies, dragonflies, and other insects.
